가로등불 밑에 다다랐을 때

나는 옷깃을 세웠지 차갑고 음습해서 

When my eyes were stabbed By the flash of a neon light 

반짝이는 네온 불빛이 내 눈을  찔렀을 때

That split the night 

그 네온 불빛은 밤의 어둠을 가르며

And touched the sound of silence 

침묵의 소리를 감싸안았네

And in the naked light I saw 

적나라한 불빛가운데서 나는 보았지

만명의 사람들 아니 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을

People talking without speaking 

그사람들은 마음에도 없는 이야기를 하고

People hearing without listening 

듣는체 하지만 실제로는 듣지않고

심금을 울리지도 못하는 노래들을 쓰고있지

침묵의 소리를 방해할 엄두를 내지 못했지

그래서 나는 '바보들

그들이 만든 네온 神에게

그러자 경고의 문구가 번쩍이었지

 네온이 만들어내는 단어중에

'예언자의 말은  적혀있어

On the subway walls and tenement halls 

지하철 벽과 싸구려 아파트 현관에 ' 라고...

Whispered

속삭였지
